And creatives from some of the best recent genre shows are involved as well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is developing a series based on David Cronenberg’s 1981 hit SCANNERS, with Cronenberg himself involved as an executive producer. Also part of the exec-producing team are William Bridges, an Emmy-winning writer for BLACK MIRROR who also penned a STRANGER THINGS episode, who is scripting and showrunning the SCANNERS series, and LOVECRAFT COUNTRY’s Yann Demange, who will direct. Pierre David, executive producer on the ’81 film and its sequels and director of SCANNER COP, is another of the exec producers on the show.

According to the Reporter, “The series is being described as a visceral thriller set in the mind-bending world of Cronenberg’s film. It will focus on two women living on the fringes of modern society who are pursued by relentless agents with unimaginable powers and thus must learn to work together to topple a vast conspiracy determined to bring them to heel.”

There’s been talk of a SCANNERS series for years–Dimension Films announced one back in 2011–as well as feature sequels. Media Res Studio, which is co-producing this SCANNERS with HBO and Wayward Films, has been working on it for five years. We’ll keep you posted about further developments!
